~ Reflections on solstice energies and living in flow with the sacred cycles of life ~

Solstice sun clear blue sky

Did you know the word solstice derives from the Latin for ‘sol’ meaning ‘sun’, and ‘sistere’ which means ‘to stand still’ – and thus means ‘sun stands still’?

For a few days around both of the solstices the sun seems to stand still – the hours of daylight remain exactly the same for around three days.

The summer solstice is the still, silent pause at the end of the inhale and the winter solstice is the silence at the end of the exhale.

Both invite us to pause and reflect.

The solstices invite us to stand still and pause and reflect as the energies of the year shift gear.

After the summer solstice we begin the slow but sure descent into the darker half of the year. And the winter solstice marks the point that the light slowly begins to return.

Now, I don’t know whether it’s because I was born under a waning moon, because my moon sign is Scorpio or because I’m entering the inner autumn of life through perimenopause … but I find myself more drawn to the energies of the waning half of the year, of late summer, autumn and winter and their invitation to slow down and go within.

Of course I love the beauty of nature blooming and the longer hours of daylight that summer brings … but I find myself most creatively alive and fulfilled in the depths and darkness of autumn and winter – whether that’s the outer seasons of the solar cycle, the lunar cycle (I LOVE the dark moon) or the inner seasons of the pre-menstruum or menstrual phases of my blood cycle and the psycho-spiritual energies of the archetypal faces of the divine feminine.

How about you?

How do you relate to spring, summer, autumn and winter?
To the new and waxing moon, the full moon, the waning moon and the dark moon?
To the pre-ovulation, ovulation, pre-menstruum and bleeding phases of your menstrual cycle, if you have one?
To the archetypal energies of the Maiden, Lover, Mother, Queen and Crone?

Over the last 5+ years I’ve been consciously working with these interweaving cycles and seasons, I’ve come to really appreciate how all of life is ever-changing and that is how it’s meant to be.

And I’ve found that when you consciously connect to the dance of these cycles around you and within you, it can invoke feelings of inner safety, confidence and self-trust so you can follow your soul’s callings and live to your full potential because you feel held by something greater than yourself – the energy of Life living itself through you.

And when you know that you are held by this spiritual force – which I feel as the Great, Divine Mother – you may find yourself spontaneously opening to new insight, unleashing your creative potential and living led by the wisdom of your soul.

Magic happens when you surrender to the natural ebb and flow of life.

A freedom is unleashed within your heart.

Your soul self can step forward to lead – that part of you which is a unique expression of the divine; that part of you which is connected to all of life; that part of you which is your true essence – your deepest self.
