Tap into the energy of winter’s stillness to stop, pause, and listen to the wise whispers of your soul and ask: what’s my soul singing for?
As we move through December and approach the Winter Solstice and the shortest day (on 22 December this year) we are in the darkest time of the year, here in the northern hemisphere.
This time of year is associated with the element of AIR in the spiritual traditions with which I work (namely the Celtic festivals, the Goddess Brighid and Her wheel of the year).
Winter air can be crisp and clear, blowing away the cobwebs in your mind, to bring clarity and inner vision.
Can you feel it in nature?
That deep, deep stillness? The frosty nip in the air? Or the muffled calm of a grey, foggy day? The silence? The sense of dormant life, sleeping…
Perhaps the crazy business (and busy-ness) of Christmas means you’re not finding time to stop and rest and tune into the cycles of nature.
Stop … and listen
How would it be just to stop a moment? (And as you’re reading this, now is as good a time as any…)
Look out at the sky – whether it’s clear and bright and blue, or Tupperware grey with clouds and dampness – can you sense how winter feels to you?
That sense that all has apparently died. Leaves have decayed. Birds are quiet. Branches are bare.
It’s a time between worlds.
The centre of the spiral of life… The end of the out-breath where all is silent and still … before the inhale of the year brings longer days and the spiral outwards towards spring.
But please don’t rush.
Spend some time in the profound depths of this stillness and silence.
Because you may just hear your soul whispering to you…
In these depths, let all else drop away.
Close your eyes … and listen.
Rest into this space between death and rebirth … and ask yourself: what is my soul singing for?
Hear your soul speaking
Take a pen and paper and ask your heart and soul these questions – they’re questions I shared at my Winter Soul Space event a few weeks ago.
These questions speak to your true essence.
Your deepest self: your soul, which is a unique manifestation of the source of all life, born into your body and this time for a reason … to sings its song.
Take a few deep breaths … settle … and open to completing these sentences however your soul guides you:
My soul is yearning for me to…
My soul’s voice is yearning to express…
I am being called to sing my soul’s song … and my soul sings for…
What baby step could I take in the next few days to sing my soul’s song?
And now take a few moments to consider how can can turn these whispers from your intuition into action… and take that action!
My soul sings for this …
I’ll leave you with some words I wrote this time last year.
This is what my soul continues to sing for…
My soul sings
My soul sings for freedom
It sings for wild, free, ecstatic dancing,
For flinging limbs whirling through the air and feet stamping in their own time,
For becoming one with the music and merging with the pulse of the universe.
My soul sings for colour.
Vibrant, mismatching hues, celebrating life.
It sings for peacock regality, and for fizzing vivacity, and for warm earthy hues.
My soul sings for beauty.
For the aching perfection of a flower.
For the wild blaze of sunset and the glowing potential of sunrise.
It sings for the magnetic opal moon and for the indigo stillness of a sky full of stars.
My soul sings for the earth,
For the land, the sea and the sky.
And returning to joy through simplicity, stillness and connection.
My soul sings.
It sings for life.
It sings for love.
